What is a prayer? What is meditation?

According to St Teresa the prayer and meditation have 4 stages and the soul ascend towards God through:

• Devout contemplation or concentration
• The ‘prayer of quiet’ where the prevailing state is one of quietude
• The devotion of union’, an ecstatic state of a blissful peace, a conscious rapture in the love of God
• The devotion of ecstasy a peaceful state, in which the body consciousness disappears, sense activity ceases; and the body is literally lifted into space.
