St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582)
A Mystic Reformer and Christian Saint
What is a prayer? What is meditation?
According to St Teresa the prayer and meditation have 4 stages and the soul ascend towards God through:
- Devout contemplation or concentration
- The ‘prayer of quiet’ where the prevailing state is one of quietude
- The devotion of union’, an ecstatic state of a blissful peace, a conscious rapture in the love of God
- The devotion of ecstasy a peaceful state, in which the body consciousness disappears, sense activity ceases; and the body is literally lifted into space.

St Teresa's prayers and meditations:
St Teresa's Prayer about Peace Within
May today there be peace within.
May you trust god that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing that you are a child of God.
St. Teresa about love
Let this presence settle into our bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and everyone of you.
The important thing is not to think much but to love much; and so do that which best stirs you to love.
St Teresa about Christ Consciousness
Christ has no body now, but yours.
No hands, no feet on earth, but yours.
Yours are the eyes through which
Christ brings compassion into the world.
Yours are the feet
with which Christ walks to do good.
Yours are the hands
with which Christ blesses the world.
St Teresa about knowing God
We shall never learn to know ourselves except by endeavoring to know God; for, beholding His greatness, we realize our own littleness; His purity shows us our foulness; and by meditating upon His humility we find how very far we are from being humble
St Teresa about Presence of God
Let nothing upset you,
let nothing startle you.
All things pass;
God does not change.
Patience wins
all it seeks.
Whoever has God
lacks nothing:
God alone is enough
St Teresa about God's Love
If, Lord, Thy love for me is strong
As this which binds me unto thee,
What holds me from thee Lord so long,
What holds thee Lord so long from me?
O soul, what then desirest thou?
Lord I would see thee, who thus choose thee.
What fears can yet assail thee now?
All that I fear is but lose thee.
Love's whole possession I entreat,
Lord make my soul thine own abode,
And I will build a nest so sweet
It may not be too poor for God.
A soul in God hidden from sin,
What more desires for thee remain,
Save but to llove again,
And all on flame with love within,
Love on, and turn to love again.
