St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582)
A Mystic, Reformer, and Christian Saint
What is a prayer? What is meditation?
According to St Teresa the prayer and meditation have 4 stages and the soul ascend towards God through:
- Devout contemplation or concentration
- The ‘prayer of quiet’ where the prevailing state is one of quietude
- The ‘devotion of union’, an ecstatic state of a blissful peace, a conscious rapture in the love of God
- The ‘devotion of ecstasy’ a peaceful state, in which the body consciousness disappears, sense activity ceases; and the body is literally lifted into space.
